There is much left to learn about early child development,
including how different parts of the brain are interrelated, and how learning is influenced by
parental nurturing, teaching and other environmental elements. Through the support of the academic
and early childhood communities, as well as organizations such as the McCormick Tribune Foundation,
The Center for Early Childhood Research at The University of Chicago is now positioned to advance our
understanding of the potential that exists within every child.
Objectives of the Center for Early Childhood Research
- To conduct leading research on the biological, psychological and social factors
affecting the cognitive development of young children;
- To develop a strong, interdisciplinary network of scholars at the University of Chicago working in this field;
- To communicate the results and policy implications of the initiative's research to key
non-academic audiences.
Researchers associated with the Initiative intend to expand public understanding of early brain and cognitive
development by sharing research findings with policy makers, educators and others in the community concerned about
the development of young children. One way this will be accomplished is through a series of
lectures designed for the early childhood community in Chicago. The scholars involved in this Initiative hope
the dialogue between researchers and the early childhood community will lead to important improvements in the
lives of children.
The McCormick Tribune Foundation
The Center for Early Childhood Research has been launched with an initial two-year grant from the
McCormick Tribune Foundation, as part of the Foundation's Focus
on Quality (FOQ). Focus on Quality is a five-year, $20 million grant program dedicated to improving the quality
of early childhood education in Chicago, particularly for low-income families. The University of Chicago and the
McCormick Tribune Foundation welcome additional funding partners with hopes of establishing a permanent Early
Childhood Center at the University of Chicago.
The McCormick Tribune Foundation was established in 1955 to enhance the effectiveness of American education,
improve the social and economic environment, encourage a free and responsible discussion of issues affecting the
nation, and stimulate responsible citizenship.
